Why does everyone have an opinion on how I should feed my unborn child? I mean I understand that Coke and Cheetos aren't an appropriate diet for a newborn (mmmm.....Cheetos), but why the huge debate over breast milk and formula? As far as I'm aware, formula does not contain poison and millions of babies happily drink it each day. And on the other side, breastfeeding is not some perverse crime against nature. I just don't get it.
So far, I've had just about everyone I know voice an opinion on the matter. Most have been fairly easygoing about it, but Tuesday I had quite the experience at the doctor's office. So, I'm lying on the exam table, naked except for my socks and a "gown" they gave me (and by gown I mean a piece of paper that didn't even cover my ass). The nurse practitioner performing my exam is busy fondling my breast while I stare at the wall. She asks me if I plan on breastfeeding the baby. I respond with a cheerful "I certainly plan on trying." She then asks if I plan on teaching my child to ride a bike when they are old enough. Umm, not sure where she's going with this, but of course I do, so I say yes. Then she comes back full of attitude with "well are you actually going to teach your child to ride a bike, or will you just try and give up when it's too hard?" Whoaaaa! Slow your roll! I just laughed it off, but damn, I couldn't believe the nerve.
Do I want to breastfeed my baby? Sure! But what if my milk never comes in, or my supply isn't enough to adequately feed the baby? Should I just let the baby starve because some nurse calls me a quitter? Of course not. I will do what is best for my child. That may be breast milk (from my breast, or gasp! a bottle), or formula. The bottom line is they are my boobies and I'll do what I want with them!
